Hello The Works readers, my name is Anshu and I write about sewing at  Blooms And Bugs. Today I’m guest posting here with a tutorial for Kitchen Wall Art.
When it comes to decorating my home “Less is More” has always been my philosophy.  I’m really picky in what I put on my walls and will happily leave them bare until I stumble upon the art that I feel is “perfect”. Combine it with a lack of time, practically no shopping and you will understand why my home has had exactly one painting on its walls. I had been itching to do something about my kitchen at least, because that’s where I spend a lot of time and it could really use some cheer. I have been bookmarking a lot of stuff on pinterest, but never really found time to take up a really big DIY project. And let’s face it, I don’t really have that talent for painting.
However, when Clothworks sent me the Gourmet Feathers collection by Ellen Crimi-Trent, all that changed.  This is just the cutest kitchen-related collection I have seen in a long time. In addition to cute prints, it also has some clever quotes prints – basically everything you would need to create cool stuff for your kitchen. What’s more this line is in gender neutral colors meaning both Monsieur and Mademoiselle will love it.
So I went to work and came up with these  four wall decorations for my kitchen. It was just too easy to do it with their panel print. Here’s how I did it.

Supplies:

Estimated Time:

Less than 30 minutes to make 4

Construction:

1. Choose which four panels you would like as your wall art and cut a piece of wonder under enough to cover those four pieces and about one inch around them. Doing this does waste some of the fabric but it ensures that all the corners get the adhesive required. You don’t want your art to start peeling at the corners.

Now place the wonder-under such that the non-paper side is with the wrong side of the fabric and the paper is facing you. Set your iron on no-steam setting and the hottest setting available. Now iron to fuse the wonder-under onto the fabric. The best way to do this is to put the iron down and lift it rather than sliding it like you normally do. Make sure to go over the all the corners and edges. It took me about 3 minutes to iron the whole thing.

2. Turn the fabric to the right side and iron for one more minute.

3. Now carefully cut out the panels that you want to use.

4. Here’s the label from the canvas ( 5 pack) that I had used for the project.

5. And here’s a picture comparing this solid backed canvas with the traditional stretched canvas that we usually see. Notice the difference in the depth. The stretched canvas is 0.75 inch while the one I used was not even 0.25 inch. I’m stressing so much about the canvas because I feel having the solid backed canvas really made a difference in the overall finish of the wall art. However I did try the same technique with traditional stapled back canvas and it works.

4. Position on your canvases to see if you like the look.

5. Gently peel off the paper backing from the back of the panels.

6. Reposition the panels on the canvas.

7. Iron them with the hottest, no steam setting. I placed the iron on the material just long enough to click a picture and then lifted and placed it on the other area. So cover each area by ironing for at least 10 seconds. Do a little extra at the corners and edges.

8. Your artwork is ready. Use Mounting tape to put it on your kitchen walls. Admire! I just love the pop of color it has brought to my kitchen.

So there! wasn’t that easy? You could also spread the cheer by giving them as hostess gift, or by sending a bunch to your favorite chef in the family.
