Supplies:
- Half yard gourmet feathers print by Ellen Crimi-Trent for Clothworks (Y1052-32)4 thin canvas ( 6 in X 8in) ( These are stretched canvases that have a solid backing throughout, unlike the canvases on stretcher bars which have support only at the borders. This will help the canvas to stay firm and not sag while making the art). I did try the traditional stapled back stretched canvas for this project and it works too. However, I preferred the solid canvas. You could use whatever you like.
- Wonder Under Fusible Interfacing ( If you sew/craft this stuff is wonderful to have in your stash)
- Foam Mounting tape aka Double Sided Tape
Estimated Time:
Less than 30 minutes to make 4
Construction:
1. Choose which four panels you would like as your wall art and cut a piece of wonder under enough to cover those four pieces and about one inch around them. Doing this does waste some of the fabric but it ensures that all the corners get the adhesive required. You don’t want your art to start peeling at the corners.
Now place the wonder-under such that the non-paper side is with the wrong side of the fabric and the paper is facing you. Set your iron on no-steam setting and the hottest setting available. Now iron to fuse the wonder-under onto the fabric. The best way to do this is to put the iron down and lift it rather than sliding it like you normally do. Make sure to go over the all the corners and edges. It took me about 3 minutes to iron the whole thing.
2. Turn the fabric to the right side and iron for one more minute.
3. Now carefully cut out the panels that you want to use.
5. And here’s a picture comparing this solid backed canvas with the traditional stretched canvas that we usually see. Notice the difference in the depth. The stretched canvas is 0.75 inch while the one I used was not even 0.25 inch. I’m stressing so much about the canvas because I feel having the solid backed canvas really made a difference in the overall finish of the wall art. However I did try the same technique with traditional stapled back canvas and it works.
4. Position on your canvases to see if you like the look.
5. Gently peel off the paper backing from the back of the panels.
6. Reposition the panels on the canvas.
7. Iron them with the hottest, no steam setting. I placed the iron on the material just long enough to click a picture and then lifted and placed it on the other area. So cover each area by ironing for at least 10 seconds. Do a little extra at the corners and edges.
8. Your artwork is ready. Use Mounting tape to put it on your kitchen walls. Admire! I just love the pop of color it has brought to my kitchen.
