My Mom is back, but this time she is upping her game and doing a full scale tutorial! As promised, here is a quick tutorial about how to make a cloth gift bag using some smaller pieces and adding some cute detail. I’m in a Christmas rush myself right now, so I won’t drag on. See below for supply list, instructions and photos! Thanks Mom!!
Required fabrics pieces
1. White : 6×15 inch
2. Blue : 1 1/4 x 15 inches
3. Green : 11×15 inches
4. Blue tie : 3×18 inches
1. Sew or serge the sections together
2. string tie: Press raw edges into the center enclosing raw ends.
fold these together to form a long finished tie and top stitch at edge to
close. pin this to the right side of the bag about 2 inches from the top
4. Sew or serge seam enclosing the tie being careful not to catch
the loose ends as you do the seam.
5. Finish the top by turning the raw edge in 1/4 inch 2 times and
sewing along the hem.
6. Center the seam over the back as shown and sew the bottom
closed, this will allow the tie to be centered so the bow will be on
the front of the bag.
And, here are some more that I made. As you can see, I don’t turn and press the edges. Instead I just go autopilot on the serger why my son presses the pedal!! He loves to drive. And, I don’t always center my ribbon because I forget or I’m in a hurry. And this is all just to tell you that these cloth bags can be dressed up a bit or dressed down and very simple. Mine take about 3-5 minutes to make and my mom’s are more like 8-12 minutes. That said, I do sometimes go all out and make it nicer and it still feels like an extremely quick activity. So, who’s gonna fill their tree with cloth bags this year? I am!!! I’ll try and dig up a picture of my mom’s tree to show you how fun it looks.
